The three-armed eggbeater ride of my childhood was called The Scrambler.  It has evolved into today’s sleeker, curvier Sizzler. The cosmetics have changed, but the experience remains the same. It’ll still make you want to hurl, and (if you don’t) it’s a great first date ride. That’s because centrifugal force smashes the riders together, forcing full side-body contact, which can be an icebreaker for shy youngsters.

This young couple seemed to be beyond their first date, but not by much. They boarded first, meaning they had to wait a few minutes before the ride began. She was in her own world, bent over her phone, texting, while he sat there alone, looking  shy and a little desperate. The ride began to move, and she was still texting. I wondered if I’d be hit by a flying smartphone when she lost her grip on it. The young man finally made a move, playfully trying to snatch the phone from her hand. Even over the carnival noises, I could hear her whine, “NOOoooooooo!” But she was laughing and flirting as she secured the device in her purse and cuddled up to him. After the ride, she was clinging to his arm as they staggered away, so I assume all was well.
